Throughout the year, the students are in a routine that that write in their journals each day to answer a Journal question that is on the board as they come in. This journal is collected and graded once a quarter based on completion of journal entries and class notes. This is all kept in their science notebooks. Each of my lessons begins with a journal question, which activate prior knowledge, poses a question that will be answered throughout the lesson that day to have them come up with ideas on this concept, or simply reviews a vocabulary term that they will need to use that day. Although these journals are not checked every day, through classroom discussion and observation, as well as the quarterly check, the students will be assessed on these journal entries.

Many of the lessons in the unit consist of group work and activities that are completed in class. All lessons will include assessment of group participation. Students are observed working in their groups and, although it will not be put in any grade book, I will keep track of the progress of the students based on observing them working together. Depending on the lesson, the students will be evaluated on different aspects of their class work. Usually class work is collected and graded.

Lesson 1- Students will be assessed based on their participation in the class activity, putting their data in the class chart and students will get a class work grade on their worksheet where they calculate ratios of their own experiment and the ratios of Mendel’s experiment.

Lesson 2- The character drawings will be collected and corrected based on the letters that they each threw and if their characters were accurately colored according to the letters.

Lesson 3- Students will be assessed based on participation in the activity and willingness to share their findings with the class. The pedigrees that are handed in will count as a class work grade for the day.

Lesson 4- Students will turn in a worksheet for their trait codes as well as a worksheet with the offspring that they created from their classmate’s code. These worksheets will be counted as classwork grades.

Lesson 5- This assignment will be assessed formatively along the way as they work in groups. The exit slip from today’s lesson will be checked as a class work grade.
